Pattern Design

Art Direction: Megan Quirolo and Margie Benford

San Francisco based apparel company Betabrand approached me about collaborating on a traditional Hawaiian shirt with a twist. My role was to interpret the design brief and translate it into a custom repeat pattern that would work as a button up shirt, yet be flexible enough to translate well to other clothing and textile products yet to be developed.

Under the art direction of Betabrand’s in-house creative team, I created a concept for a shirt that would take the traditional outlay of a Hawaiian shirt, and incorporate psychoactive plants and fungi to appeal to a mischievous, San Francisco-centric audience. I used a combination of traditional patterning techniques to assemble hand drawn elements into a pattern that would be repeated seamlessly throughout the garment.

The end product was a striking shirt boasting a mix of psychoactive botanicals and fungi, peering eyes, and a subtler psychedelic color palette.
